The GR142 is one of the Long Distance Paths on the south face of the Sierra Nevada. It has o total length of 144 kilometres and is divided into thirteen sections. The description in the Spanish guidebook is from east to west. The starting point is Lanjarón (Granada province) and the finishing point is Fiñana (Almería province). This Alpujarras path crosses a number of valleys which are provided with water from the Sierra Nevada. The principal rivers that water the Alpujarras are the Guadalfeo, the Río Grande de Adra and the Andaráx. 

This path passes through mountain villages with a lot of character, for its arquitecture as well as for the way of life of its inhabitants.These villages are surrounded by orchards and terraces on which the local people grow their vegetables. From a distance we see mountain slopes with white dots enclosed by green zones. The other LDP that traverses the area, is the GR7. As these two paths coincide at various points, it is possible to make up a circular walking trip of various days, combining sections of the two.

A number of the ´El Paraje´ itineraries cover sections of this route. These are for example walks that start in neighbouring villages like Juviles and Cádiar.From Juviles it is possible to walk to Lobras and Lobrasán. From Cádiar we also have a route that passes through Lobras. These are walks on old paths through vineyards, olive, almond and fig groves. The GR142 to the east of Cádiar, towards Jorairátar passes through a dry watercourse and offers a completly different landscape.

With a short transfer by car from ´El Paraje´ to the Portichuelo de Cástaras, Venta de Relleno, or Cortijo Panjuila, it is possible to cover sections of the GR142 in the Tahá valley. Going from a village on one side of the gorge to a village on the other side, the route follows the ´carihuelas´. These are cld steep zigzagging paths to get from Busquístar to Notáez and from Fondales to Campuzano for example. Between Ferreirola and Fondales there is little height difference and the path runs through orchards and terraces, passing beautiful threshing floors and fountains.
