Text of module :  Hiking - GR7 route

There are eleven European long distance walking routes. The E4 connects Tarifa - the southernmost tip of Spain - with Cyprus. The E4 is over 10,000 km long, of which 2750 red-and-white waymarked kilometres meander through Spain. In Spain the Long Distance Paths (LDPs) are called Gran Recorridos (GRs). Between Tarifa and Andorra the route is the GR7 (2300 km). From Andorra it passes through Catalonia where the E4 is split up in different Gran Recorridos (450 km).

In Andalusia the GR7 starts in the province of Cádiz before splitting into two in the Málaga province. The northern fork heads through Córdoba and Jaén provinces and the southern fork through Granada and Almería. The total lenght of th GR7 in Andalusia is 1163 km. In October 2007 the guide ´Walking the GR7 in Andalucia´ came out. This book published by Cicerone is the first publication that covers the whole of the GR7 in Andalusia.

The section that crosses the western part of the Alpujarras in the Granada province is one of the best known stretches of the GR7. This part between Lanjarón and the Puerto de la Ragua covers 115 km. It passes many picturesque villages and the landscape is wonderfully varied. In 2007 they put new marker posts and repainted the markings.Of this section a Spanish guidebook is available ´Senda Granadina-Tramo Alpujarreño Lanjarón-Laroles´ published by Proyecto Sur de Ediciones.
