Text of module :  Hiking - High mountains

´El Paraje´ is a good base to explore the high mountians of the south face of Sierra Nevada. We have for example a ´high´ route from our Casa Rural to Trevélez. This walk involves the ascent of the Peña de los Papos (2538 m), and offers some excellent views. We also have descriptions of routes that start either in Trevélez (20 min by car) or Capileira (50 min by car). Apart from this, it is possible to drive to the Puerto de la Ragua (90 min by car) and start walking at an altitude of 2,000 metres.

The Mulhacén (3,482 m) is the highest mountain on the Iberian Peninsula. The south flank is gentle and presents no technical difficulties. The level of difficulty depends on the weather, the amount of snow, level of fitness and the chosen route. These are some alternatives:-from Trevélez via the Mirador and over the Loma de Mulhacén-from Trevélez via the Siete lagunas (more experience required)-from Trevélez or Caplieira via the Poqueira Refuge -from the Hoya del Portillo (car pak at 2,150 m height)We have descriptions of the different ascends.

A classical walk from Trevélez is the ascend of the Cañada de Siete Lagunas. It is with more than 1,500 m of climbing a challenging walk. It is a steady climb until you get to the Chorreras Negras, a beautiful cascade. After this last steep ascend you get to the Laguna Hondera. This is at 2,850 m the lowest of the siete lagoons tucked into the glaciation cirque defined by the Lomas de Mulhacén and Alcazaba.

To get to the high mountains with less height difference in one day, a night in the Poqueira hut can be an alternative. This mountain refuge at 2,500 m is open all year round, has dormitory facilities, hot showers and a bar and restaurant service. From Trevélez it is about a three hour walk, and from Capileira four hours. There are several unmanned refuges and camping is allowed prior written notificacion of the park authorities. In the summer it is possible to use a microbus service from Capileira to the Alto de Chorilllo (2,700 m).

The Puerta de la Ragua is a mountain pass at 2,000 m height. To get there from ´El Paraje´ takes about an hour and half by car. We have several descriptions of hiking routes starting from this point. One possibility is the ascend of the Chullo (2,610 m), the highest summit of the Almería province. To the west you can climb via Morrón del Hornillo and Morrón Sanjuanero up to the top of the Morrón del Mediodía (2,754 m). These routes offer grand views on clear days.
