The Sierra Nevada National Park and its southern slopes, mainly formed by the Alpujarra, is an attractive holiday destination for hikers. Conquering high mountain passes, strolling leisurely through pretty whitewashed villages, walking through citrus groves or hiking on ancient mule trails bordered with agaves ; it´s all possible in this area of outstanding natural beauty. The landscape of most walks is scenic and varied.
´Low Alpujarras´ (700-1,400 metres)Walks in the ´low Alpujarras´ are hikes in the verdant valleys with terraced fields on old mule trails that usually follow ancient routes leading through fields and orchards, passing mills and threshing circles. In some villages it will be possible to find a shop or a bar for a lunch. For less experienced walkers it is also a good hiking area. Some stamina is important though, because on each walk there will be differences in height to be bridged. ´Mid-Alpujarras´(1,400-2,000 metres)Walks in the ´Mid-Alpujarras´ are hikes in the zone from 1,400 up to 2,000 metres. These are routes through an area of great natural beauty using ancient paths, forest trails and dirt tracks. The hikes lead walkers along water channels and rivers, through holm oak, chestnut and pine forests. The chance to encounter other people is quite small. As you won´t pass any villages, you need to be well prepared for these walks, so take sufficient food, water and good clothing. ´High mountains´(2,000-3,479 metres)In the Sierra Nevada massif, some 16 summits exceed the 3,000 metres and it contains the highest point of continental Spain, Mulhacén at 3,479 m.Technically the routes are not difficult, but they can be quite strenuous for differences in altitude and depending weather conditions, your experience and fitness. You need to take into account that on the peaks the temperatures are 14C less than in the valleys and that there are few waymarks.
