Hiking - Walking routes

´El Paraje´ is a good base for hikers who would like to explore the Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada. As it is situated at an altitude of
1,400 meters, you can either choose a walk through the valleys or explore the higher parts. Bérchules has a beautiful river valley and the Long Distance Path E4/GR-7 passes this
village. It´s centrally situated, which makes it possible to do walks in de Trevélez area, the Taha or Poqueira Valley, the Sierra de la Contraviesa and also near the Puerta de la Ragua. We have itinenaries in all these different areas.
There are quite a few way marked paths in the area. Most villages in the Alpujarras offer short local walks. These ´Senderos Locales´ are signposted with green-and-white way marks. Apart from these local paths, there are official ´Pequeños Recorridos´, signposted with yellow-and-white marks. There are several Long Distance Paths in the area. These LDP´s are signposted with red-and-white way marks. The GR-7 calls in at Bérchules and Alcútar. The GR-240 or Ruta Sulayr passes through the sierra above Bérchules.The GR-142 winds its way along the Sierra de Contraviesa, the mountainous area that we can see from ´El Paraje´.We have Spanish guide books of the GR-7, the GR-240 and the GR-142 and can make copies of sections on request. Of the GR-7 we have an English guide book as well. The short circular waymarked walks of some villages have been newly signposted not too long ago. A few villages offer new hiking possibilities, like Trevélez and Órgiva. Another new initiative is the Ruta Medieval. This route is marked with wooden posts with white arrows and yellow and white waymarks. This linear walk starts officially in Pórtugos and ends in Juviles. We have a description of this route (the PR-A 299) in opposite direction for those who want to start in Juviles. We have a great number of Spanish and English walking guides at our guests´ disposal. Just to name a few: ´Excursiones por Sierra Nevada´, ´Sierra Nevada-Guía de Montaña´, ´Sierra Nevada 30 itinerarios ´, ´Holiday Walks in the Alpujarra´ and Walking in Andalucía. On request we can make copies of walks from these books. The Discovery walking guide ´Walk! the Alpujarras´ and ´Alpujarras Tour & Trail map´ (1:40,000 scale) can be bought at ´El Paraje´.
